DOGMA research

DOGMA ontology research (Developing Ontology-Grounded Methods and Applications)

DOGMA stands for Developing Ontology-Grounded Methods and Applications. In this project (partially supported by the V.U.B. internal research fund) we are setting up a set of ontology servers in order to assist the community-based gathering and incremental evolution of ontologies. The separation of an ontology into lexons (extremely simple linguistic structures) and a layer of ontological commitments (reified as annotated constraints of lexon usage by applications) intends to achieve a degree of scalability not possible with more complex representations hitherto used in the semantic web literature and practice. This extensional approach naturally leads to very large sets, thereby moving the research issue to fundamental principles of the processes and methodology surrounding ontology engineering such as community agreement, evolution and organization, rather than representational power or sophistication. Sources of domain-specific knowledge, as opposed to general-purpose lexicons like Wordnet etc., will be formed e.g. by relational database schemas, yielding an activity best described as ontology mining. Interesting research issues about contextual layers within ontologies arise here as one e.g. needs to separate local jargon from “common knowledge”. Other important sources are numerous existing thesauri and glossaries.

Open Semantic Cloud for Brussels 


Open Semantic Cloud for Brussels, or OSCB, started on February 1st, 2011 and aims to cover Brussels, metaphorically speaking of course, with a cloud of structured and interlinked information elements produced by “atomizing” a collection of relevant databases and other resources. Linked Data is a global initiative to interlink resources on the Web using two “simple” technologies: Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI) for accessing the resources and the Resource Description Framework (RDF) for representing knowledge and annotating those resources. Various governments (UK, US, Germany) are launching initiatives to (a) make public sector data easily available with Linked Data and (b) encourage researchers to analyze the data as well as application developers to build applications around that data, in order to stimulate innovation, business and the general wealth of society. OSCB is a research project supported by the Brussels Capital Region. The project is coordinated by VUB STAR Lab and involves ULB WIT, VUB ETRO and EHB-CVC.

Summary:
The objective of the 3D anatomical human network to increase, by scientific exchange, the development of new technologies and knowledge around virtual representations of human body for interactive medical applications. The network has a specific goal: developing realistic functional three-dimensional models for the human musculoskeletal system, the methodology being demonstrated on the lower limb.

Background - Why is STARlab on this project?
People, organizations and software must communicate, although different needs and backgrounds imply different viewpoints. The divergence is natural and valuable, but it leads to problems in communication, interaction and understanding [Faquhar 1997]. STARlab's experience in ontology developement can address these interaction problems by providing an interdisciplinary platform for co-developping ontologies by multiple users from different domains.

How can STARLAB contribute?

+ Integration of Knowledge Management:
+ Collecting different parts of knowledge from domain-experts (e.g. medical doctors, researchers) in the form of templates which can be submitted online.
+ Supporting domain-experts to create these templates which interact with STARlab's DOGMA server. Templates provide elementary data to fill the ontology framework.
+ Interdisciplinary Domain management: Laying bridges where data are created and disseminated (e.g. set disciplines in relation to each other: MRI, physics and medical knowledge).
+ Building information management framework considering distributed and collaborative settings, such as the Semantic Web, where ontologies naturally co-evolve with their communities of use (de Moor et al., 2006) - a new way of knowledge sharing inside the network.

    Europe is currently the world’s major area with the highest proportion of elderly citizens. The progressive ageing of the population will lead to an increase in the proportion of the people with impairments, disabilities or chronic illnesses. As a result, European governments need to face several challenges: improve medical treatment and support, find a more economically sustainable model of care and of the welfare state... The development and usage of new technologies, while not completely solving all the above issues, are likely to provide relief in many situations as well as to facilitate the care for the elderly and to make it more economically feasible.

    The main goal of AmIE project is to offer a comprehensive response to the above concerns through the development and testing of a complete intelligent, distributed system (including sensors, actuators, distributed intelligence, databases, ubiquitous connectivity and friendly adaptive interfaces as its main ingredients) whose target is to improve the quality of life, providing customized support to all people in need of assistance, according to their own specific situation, and in a non-intrusive and respectful way. More specifically, the system will be able to adapt to the users’ needs and character, helping them in getting through their daily routine in a way that is effective in providing support where needed without making them feel humiliated by excessive attention.

Bona Tema Project Description

Project overview

This project aims at the development of an ontology-based knowledge system containing biological information on yeast. Such a knowledge system will allow biologists and bioinformaticians to efficiently retrieve biological information on yeast and, most importantly, to use this knowledge in the analysis of microarray data. The knowledge system will contain a compilation of all available information on yeast together with gene expression data from relevant microarray experiments. Additionally, algorithms/tools and the new information (analysis results) they generate, will be integrated in the system. The following tools can be integrated: algorithms for clustering, classification and genetic network inference based on microarray data, finding regulatory DNA motifs in promoter sequences and information retrieval from the scientific literature.

Aims

The project aims at the creation of a biological knowledge system containing domain knowledge on yeast. Through the use of an ontology, the knowledge is stored explicitly en reusable in an ontology. More specific aims are the development of methodologies for :

  • the construction and adjustment of biological ontologies
  • the interoperability of prior knowledge and algorithms for data analysis
  • the comparison of biological information and analysis results
  • ·

The goal of the project is to provide an efficient system to retrieve information on yeast and to use this information in various algorithms. The main application will be the inference of genetic networks of yeast.

  • Summary: The main objective of this project is to support the creation of an online Consumer Complaints Resolution Mechanism (CCRM) by developing a standard but extensible form and business process (CCForm) which has widespread industry and consumer support. The form and process must facilitate cross-language communication, to support cross-border e-Commerce, and be capable of easy implementation in software. COMDRIVE RFP: Community Driven Requests for Proposals

Duration:  July 2009 - December 2010

Summary: When consumers want to buy a certain item on the internet today, they have to browse through literally hundreds of offerings and thousands of results on the Web and this number is expected to increase. The current model is vendor-driven, where vendors publish and offer their products online. iChoosr is developing an application that will work the other way around, i.e. consumers will be able to express the intent to buy a certain product in an interface and language they are comfortable with. This Personal RFP (Request For Proposals) platform will send out the request to a networked vendor infrastructure, which will respond to the request with proposals. This approach also avoids the user leaving his or her personal details on every site he or she visits. The architectural principles of the platform already align with the up and coming VRM movement, pioneered by the Harvard University Berkman Center (also known as the inventors of Creative Commons). iChoosr [1] intends to become the first and foremost commercial VRM player in Europe.

  • Summary: In the European Telematics (4-5th FP) project Hypermuseum (completed March 2001), the subject of research was the question how teachers in cultural science, with a very limited knowledge of new, advanced technologies, can be supported and encouraged to use these new media in their education. In cooperation with several renowned museums from different European countries, STAR Lab built a sophisticated application that allows teachers to easily generate course material which can be put available on the Internet. For this purpose, the software system extracts information and media directly from the European museums. On the other hand, the application also enables the suppliers of information (in our case the museums), to make their information available in such a way that this can be a possible source of income.

  • Summary: The IMAGEN (Intelligent Multimedia Application GENerator) project will develop an integrated set of tools for publication and distribution of digital media over the Internet. Pilot applications will be generated and tested in two succesive large-scale trials, with the participation of multimedia content providers and several hundred end-users. The modules will be based on advanced technologies supplied by four consortium partners: collaborative filtering by CBE (NL), intelligent agents by Bar-Ilan University (ISR), constraint-based layout technology by DFKI (D), secure online distribution of digital media by MediaSec(D). The integration of the tools and the development of the pilot applications will be performed by RadicalMedia (P), a leading Portuguese multimedia software company. Interactive Labs (I) will provide content from its parent company, Italian publisher GIUNTI, and will co-develop the pilot applications. Interactive Labs will be joined by other content providers in the second phase of the trial.

  • Summary: Irisweb is a recently completed project (June 2001) in which STAR Lab, in cooperation with the Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommissie (VGC) and the Hoofdstedelijke Openbare Bibliotheek Brussel (HOB), researched ontology-supported ways to perform browsing in a (digital) library. In a traditional library, a user does a lot more than just looking up the book (s)he wants: (s)he walks around through the different parts of the library, takes a look at books located near the desired work, at book titles that other people took out of the shelves, overhears conversations of others about interesting books, ... In short, the user also assembles and uses information available in his/her environment. In IrisWeb we have implemented a small demonstration prototype that wants to illustrate possibilities for emulating such a richer experience even in the digital version of a library, be it without the limitations of place or time inherent in a classical library.

It uses technologies such as natural language parsing, multilingual information extraction and hypertext generation.     (in Dutch) Op het Semantisch Web worden webpagina’s geannoteerd volgens overeengekomen metadata via standaarden zoals het Resource Description Framework (RDF). Semantische metadata laten webapplicaties toe om informatie uit diverse webpagina’s op een betekenisvolle manier te manipuleren en uit te wisselen. Het inhoudelijk structureren van webpagina’s gebeurt via ontologieën. Een ontologie is een formeel gestandaardiseerd classificatiesysteem waarin wordt aangegeven welke betekenisvolle elementen of concepten er binnen een bepaald kennisdomein bestaan en hoe deze aan elkaar worden gerelateerd. Onderzoek in het Europese FF POIROT project (IST – 2001-38248) heeft ondermeer aangetoond dat terminologiebeschrijvingen, voorzien van rijke semantische informatie, bijdragen tot een efficiënte en kwaliteitsvolle opbouw van domeingerelateerde ontologieën. Dit onderzoek bouwt verder op deze vaststelling en wil onderzoeken hoe betekenisverschillen tussen termen, als gevolg van applicatiegerichte en culturele betekenisvorming, via een meertalige terminologische analyse kunnen worden geïntegreerd in de ontologie. Hierbij wordt als casusstudie een set van functietermen en competenties genomen. Dit project zal uiteindelijk een meertalige terminologische kennisbron opleveren waarin de betekenisvolle verschillen tussen verwante termen expliciet is gemaakt.     It is to use ontologies to enhance human resource management. This project tries to stimulate the use of ontology engineering in the offshore software industries, by having various software companies work together in defining the anchor ontology to which their specifications are linked. The anticipated benefits are less struggles to get interfaces working which are technically compatible but not organizationally.

  • Summary: PROLIX is a 48-months research and development integrated project co-funded by the European Commission under the Sixth Framework Programme, Priority 2 "Information Society Technologies".

    The objective of PROLIX is to align learning with business processes in order to enable organisations to faster improve the competencies of their employees according to continuous changes of business requirements.

    To reach this goal, PROLIX develops an open, integrated reference architecture for process-oriented learning and information exchange.

    PROLIX supports a complete learning process life cycle, comprising:

    1. the analysis of complex business situations;
    2. the identification of individual and organisational learning goals;
    3. the analysis of competencies and their matching with individual skills
    4. the definition of appropriate learning strategies and the simulation of competency-oriented processes;
    5. the execution of improved learning processes;
    6. the monitoring of learners’ performance according to the goals defined.

    STARlab contribution: ontology creation and evolution methodology and tool kit, annotation methodology and toolkit to link up (anchor) NL-concepts in competency descriptions and business/learning models to an ontology, consultancy for the methodologies, training of end users.

  • Summary: In a global communication system, many data bases and data sources all have their proper data structure and representation. This pluriformity of data sources puts on obstacle to the integratability of their information as well as to a uniform rendering of it. As a result, propagating medical information in the system becomes really difficult. A really fundamental solution can be found in the semantic coupling (on the meaning level) of the data bases to an ontology or formal conceptualisation of a domain, c.q. the medical domain in a hospital.   • Summary: TREVI, explored the possibility to deliver personalized information in a large scale manner. In this era of new media, individuals as well as companies are overwhelmed with the never ending stream of information. One of the media-companies within the consortium, Reuters plc., has a new news-item available every 6 seconds, 24 hours a day, each day throughout the whole year. Once a limit is reached, the user no longer finds his way through this huge amount of information, and stops scanning the items. Within the TREVI project, along with other universities and companies, a software system was designed which allows filtering the stream of information on basis of user profiles, and situating individual news items within the context of other information.

  • Summary: In the European ESPRIT project Web for Schools (WfS), the applicability of the Internet technology within the secundary education system is explored. In a big experiment (150 highschools from every European country were equipped with internet access for this project) the central infrastructure was completely designed, build and maintained by STAR Lab. This system offered the opportunity to the involved schools to construct online courses about the subjects of their choice, and put these courses available for the other schools participating. This project was enthusiastically welcomed within the educational community, and opened the way for a further introduction of this new education medium throughout Europe.
