The Semantics Technology and Applications Research Laboratory (VUB STARLab), founded by Prof. Dr. Robert Meersman, has been VUB's focal point in research on databases and semantics. STARLab contributes to a new state of the art in information-based technologies, both with research and development, and by applying our expertise to real-life situations.
Dr. Ioana Ciuciu visited INRIA, Sophia-Antipolis, France and MIRALab, University of Geneva, Switzerland from 28 June - 7 July, based on the International Mobility Contract (IMC) of the 3DAH Project. The principle of the IMC is to give researchers the opportunity of working with a different partner team for a short period of time.
The second 3D Anatomical Human Summer School was held in Chania, Crete, between 23-24 May 2010. The Summer School was preceded by the 3DAH Internal Meeting, on 22nd May 2010. The two events took place at Minoa Palace Hotel in Chania (see right picture).
Dr. Ioana Ciuciu attended the meeting on behalf of STARLab.
The Greek Interoperability Center is an organization supported by the EC 7th Framework Programme. The Greek Interoperability Centre aims at becoming a premium research centre in the field of Interoperability, forming a strong regional pole of research and technology in Europe.
Prof. Dr. Zhiwen Yu will visist STARLab and give a talk on Feb. 8, 2010. He is currently a professor at the School of Computer Science, Northwestern Polytechnical University, P. R. China. He received his B.Eng, M.Eng and Ph.D degree of Engineering in computer science and technology in 2000, 2003 and 2005 respectively from the Northwestern Polytechnical University. He has worked as a research fellow at the Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies, Kyoto University, Japan from Feb. 2007 to Jan. 2009, and a post-doctoral researcher at the Information Technology Center, Nagoya University, Japan in 2006-2007.
EC Prolix project successfully ended on 1/12/2009. The final general assembly meeting has been held at Bedford Lodge Hotel in New Market, Suffolk, UK from Jan. 20th, 2010 till Jan. 22nd, 2010. Jan. 19th is the internal meeting for the preparation.

We had STARLab New Year lunch at la quincaillerie, which resides at Ixelles, Rue Du Page 45, Brussels.
We choose there because of beautiful 80's decoration and good food (see the picture on the right from the official website: http://www.quincaillerie.be/).
On Dec. 18, 2009, we had a STARLab Christmas dinner at an Ethiopian restaurant.
It was a great dinner. Everyone enjoyed it so much. Good food in huge quantities, good wine, beautiful waitresses, warm environment and above all ... good company!
The restaurant is called Kokob - the name is very exotic!

We would like to thank Dr. Dongya Wu for her stay at the STARLab as a visiting scholar. During past 10 months, she has been always very helpful to every researcher.
On July 30th, 2009. We have organized a goodbye party + dinner for Dongya at the restaurant "Au Thé de Pékin " (丽晶大酒店). We have enjoyed very much the Dim Sum.
After months of hard work, we are proud to have released the first beta version of our Collibra Studio product to our partners and visionary customers. The Collibra Studio beta features a full-fledged editor to model, store and re-use business semantics in the simplest way possible. Next to that, the studio also supports operationally leveraging these business semantics to enable automatic data transformation and translation between different formats.
The second International Workshop on Community-Based Evolution of Knowledge-Intensive Systems (COMBEK) is held in Vilamoura, Portugal: November 1-6, 2009.
COMBEK is chaired by Pieter De Leenheer, Martin Hepp, and Amit Sheth and co-located with OnTheMove conferences 2009, co-sponsored by Collibra. Proceedings will be published by Springer Verlag.
While we are warming up and working out our spin-off's showcase for SemTech09 in June in the Valley, Tony Shaw invited us to write an article for his revamped Semantic Universe blog. You can find the whole article here. Here is the summary:
Exploration of the Intersection between Ontologies, Medical Imaging, and human Anatomy.
The research will take place at STARlab, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, within the framework of the European Marie Curie Research and Training Network entitled 3D Anatomical Human.
STARLab's spinoff Collibra is proud to present a case study at I.T. Works' seminar on semantics.
I.T. Works is an organization that has been organizing seminars and workshops on technical and business IT topics for more than 15 years. Their events are high-quality, information-packed, vendor-independent and provide solutions to the problems that IT professionals face today.
This seminar provides an introduction in the world of linked data and semantics. It explains how to:
