From a practical point of view there is a growing need of interoperability between different ontologies about overlapping domains. Therefore a thorough understanding of alignment and merging of ontologies is needed. Aligning two ontologies with one another requires a mapping between the concepts of the two ontologies while both ontologies remain existing next to each other. Merging of two ontologies on the other hand results in one big ontology. Aligning or merging of ontologies is necessary to enable communications between existing ontologies.
The aim of the apprenticeship/thesis is to extend the alignment & merging module within the DOGMA Studio Workbench with a graphical component that will support and guide the process of aligning and merging distinct ontologies.
